First, a major project starts with a dream of what is not yet seen by very many people. The Center for Civil and Human Rights started in the minds of a few people who had led the Civil Rights Movement-- Juanita Abernathy, Evelyn Lowery, Hosea Williams, Andrew Young and John Lewis. Then it grew into a vision, a hope, a real plan for building an institution that will celebrate the past and shape the future.
We always projected a major role-- given the CCHR's cultural and economic role in the future of Atlanta and Georgia. Last Monday, the Atlanta City Council by an overwhelming 12-1 vote approved up to $40M in the upcoming Westside Bond issue. This provides not only significant financial momentum, but a tremendous opportunity to attract private support.
It's time to bring everyone together to build the CCHR sooner than later, so that we can start shaping our future.
